Tony Marturano was born in 1969 in
Bedfordshire where he attended school until the age of 11. He then
moved to Italy with his parents where he attended
college. After that, he found work as a DJ with a local radio station.
This led him to cutting hiw own demos and winning a record deal. "It
isn't something I talk about that much these days. But it was fine
while it lasted although it is true what they say, you tend to lose
some control over your life and anybody who knows me knows that I
am a bit of a control freak!"
After five years, Tony returned to the UK where he indulged his passion
for writing whilst working as a freelance photographer. His eventual
involvement with TMH International, a company specialising in the
sale of posters and greetings cards, led him to work with greeting
card giants, Athena International and for magazines, such as FOR WOMEN.
But
although Tony enjoys photography very much, his true passion is writing.
Thus, backed by TMH International, he formed the drama company, TMH
Productions. TMH has staged several of Tony's
plays
throughout
the UK.
In
1997 - Nimbus Begins
Tony started work on his first full length novel, Nimbus. Inspired by
his best friend and forced to juggle the writing between his full time
job and any spare time he could lay his hands on, it took Tony over
two years to complete the manuscript which was sent to
numerous UK publishers and agents. However, the response was very disappointing
and although a few publishers showed an interest in Nimbus, none were
prepared to offer Tony a publishing contract.
In
2001 - Nimbus Published.
Tony submitted the manuscript to a group of investors who loved the
material." They thought it was so good it had to be printed."
Thus, Glacyk Publishing was born. It was under this imprint that Nimbus
was published
in March 2001. The book received a high profile publicity campaign via
local radio, bus, newspaper ads and a book signings. "I was terrified
at my first book signing because, as a new author, you are dogged by
that very title. Readers and those in the industry are wary of an unknown
writer."
Nimbus
has proved a relative success but Tony's not ready to retire, "I
have a very good job and I don't particularly want to give it up unless
I really have to. Nimbus sales may be good but I don't think I can retire
just yet!"
2002
- Unspeakable.
Tony completed his second manuscript, Unspeakable; a supernatural thriller.
"I wanted to write something original and atmospheric.. something
that would scare the readers witless!" But it would take a while
to complete. . "I had to complete the second draft by getting up
at five o' clock every morning and producing two hours worth of writing
before leaving for the office. It was tough but hopefully it's paid
off." Tony confesses that the manuscript could still do with another
draft before it's submitted for publication.
In
the meantime, he's already laid thirty thousand words of his third novel.
"The story had been suggested to me a few times by readers of Nimbus
but I didn't seriously consider it until now. The title's a secret but
lets just say it follows the Nimbus genre... they'll be a lot of action,
adventure and more! Unspeakable was a bit of a departure for me. The
story does twist and turn but a lot of the suspense is held inside the
supernatural elements in the plot, there wasn't much room for car chases
and explosions! Unspeakable is much more suspenseful and eerie. With
the new manuscript I've returned to what I enjoy doing the most... creating
chaos!"
2003
- Coming Up for Air.
Whilst Tony was working on this new project something happened, "A
personal relationship that I had been in for six years ended. I took
it pretty badly and was unable to write for a while. Like most people,
I thought I would never recover from it and, most importantly, thought
I would never shift the writer's block that had descended on me. But
I did. I was in the USA at the time, considering the future, when I
had the idea for a new project; a non fiction novel about relationships.
Why, as humans, we can be so loving but sadly, most often, hurtful to
each other. Clearly, this was a subject matter that I had become very
intimate with. I also met many people who shared their personal stories
with me." And thus the project dubbed 'Coming Up For Air' was born.
Since then, Tony has gone on to interview many more people, including
members of the United States Air force and Marine Corps. "I wanted
to to include some chapters on the stresses and strains of relationships
in the military but, most importantly, I wanted to write something that
anybody could pick up and read. And I think I am doing a pretty good
job so far as my Mum was actually reading excerpts from the first draft
the other day!"
So
is this the beginning of a new genre for Tony?
"Well, this is certainly a bit of a subject departure for me. We
will have to see how things turn out."
December 2004 - The Move.
With only a few days to Christmas, Tony bought and moved into his new
home situated in a small village near Cambridge, UK. With the investment
came a village store and post office! Consequently, he spent most of
the festive season setting in motion a complete refurbishment of the
premises. The process has demanded a lot of his time so Tony has taken
a break from writing. "It's going to take a while to get everything
up and running but I hope to get back to 'Coming Up For Air' soon. Ideally,
I would like the first draft completed by May 1st which is when the
project was conceived. We'll see how things pan out!"
December 2005 - Coming up for Air suspended.
"I certainly haven't given up on this book but the delays have
inevitably forced me to abandon this project for now but it will get
finished. I simply don't know when. As for all those that have collaborated
so far. I still have your stories and they will be published."

2007 - Marturano Enterprises is born
Marturano Enterprises is the umbrella under which all of Tony's work
and investments will be known.
October 2007 - a Different Angle Magazine
Work starts on the new publication, 'A Different Angle'. "I've
been writing a village newsletter for a few years now on just two pages!
When you start reprinting in the hundreds you realise it's time to expand!
'A Different Angle' will be the first publication under the banner of
Marturano Enterprises and will focus on everyday issues and people but
from 'a different angle'. The publications will be rolled out locally,
regionally and then who knows!".
2008 - Tony Invests in Cambridge company
"I've worked here for nearly a decade now. I think it's time to
show a different kind of commitment and is a natural path for Marturano
Enterprises."
March 2008 - a Different Angle published.
After a multitude of delays, a Different Angle is published in March
2008. "We had a really hard time finding a decent printing firm
to trust with our quarterly 15,000 run of the magazine but I think we're
finally there. I'm really pleased with the quality of their work and
of course that a Different Angle is finally printed!"
So
with all this activity, what of the novelist? Have you lost your focus?
"I don't think so. Things have simply been very busy of late. All
of the projects I'm involved in have been around for quite some time.
It makes sense to 'formalise' them but writing is what I love. 'A Different
Angle' is a very exciting project and it gives me the opportunity to
communicate with people in a relatively instant way rather than over
years but I love writing novels and I'm still frequently asked for my
opinion on relationships which means I have not abandoned 'Coming Up
For Air'. In fact, I feel that I'm much better equipped to complete
this book now that time has given me perspective and experience. I'm
more determined than ever but there's only so much time! One thing is
for sure, I owe it to all those people who collaborated with the project;
it will be published even if in pocket book format. Right now, 'A Different
Angle' is going to need some of my undivided attention and as soon as
that's up and running, I'll be reviewing all of the projects. I think
2008 has been a good start, and no this isn't just typical 'writer's
procrastination' , at least I don't think it is!"
May
2008 - Coming up For Air is reviewed - Tony appeals to everybody involved
in the project to contact him.
"I've
been reviewing all of the project material during a recent vacation
and discovered that I had actually laid down many more words than I
thought! Which is great news! However, I have discovered, much to my
dissmay, that people have naturally moved on in their lives which means
all of my contact information is out of date. I would really like to
get in touch with everybody involved in the project for an update. Therefore,
if you are reading this, PLEASE get in touch!"
